Travertine is a type of limestone that’s formed around hot springs and mineral springs through the rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate. It can have a fibrous or concentric appearance and comes in a variety of colors, including white, tan, cream, and rusty. Travertine is often used as a building material and can be found in many ancient buildings around the world, including in Italy, Turkey, and Peru.  

Travertine is porous and has natural holes and troughs throughout the stone, which means it can absorb liquids and stains. To protect it from damage, it’s important to seal it properly and care for it regularly. Travertine is also sensitive to acidic substances like vinegar, citrus juices, and cleaning products, which can etch the surface and leave permanent damage.
